What’s Wrong With this Picture? – Winter 2019

What’s Wrong With this Picture?

WHAT DID YOU FIND WRONG?

• Worker in a trench clearly 5’ or greater with no protective system in place to prevent trench collapse.

• Spoils pile is less than 2’ from the edge.

• No means of egress present.

• Worker is standing too close to the excavation; could fall in, cause the trench to cave in or both.

• The person in the trench is not paying attention to the person on top.

• The track hoe is not facing the trench; if it backs up, it could go down the trench bank.

• Raises the question how they were able to get to the bottom safely, hopefully they were not lowered with the track hoe!

Our Fall Edition Winner is Jim Hackworth, Project Manager, Southeastern Surveying, in Tampa, FL.

Congratulations Jim!

Your $100 gift card is on the way!

WHEN IT COMES to safety, it’s all in the details. Every day we’re faced with choices between safety, efficiency, and productivity. While we can’t always know the circumstances surrounding a situation, and we should never jump to conclusions, sometimes dangerous situations are obvious. Being able to identify those situations and taking action to fix them increases everyone’s safety. What would you change to make this situation safer? *Photo courtesy of Eric Giguere, Founder of Safety Awareness Solutions, [www.safetyawarenesssolutions.com](http://www.safetyawarenesssolutions.com).*
