Before he ever buckled himself into the passenger seat of a helicopter to inspect natural gas lines, Mark Byrd witnessed the devastating impact of a major gas-line eruption.
On Oct. 27, 1998, a gas line erupted about a half-mile south of Holmes Road in the Hickory Hill area. The area was being developed commercially. Warehouses were springing up almost overnight in former farm land.
A contractor failed to call 811 before he started digging.
