Special Insert: Oceania Damage Prevention Conference

Zero Harm, Zero Damage:

Australia’s national organisation, the Association of Australian Dial Before You Dig Service is proud to be the major sponsor for the inaugural Oceania Damage Prevention Conference at the Gold Coast in August this year. I believe the conference provides the first ever opportunity in Australia for the utility management and construction sector to meet and review industry best practices in damage and injury prevention. It is also an opportunity for Australia to learn and compare with industry experts from the USA, New Zealand, Canada and South East Asia.

This inaugural conference delivers international education and understanding on damage and injury prevention by demonstrating firsthand, the thinking and commitment to damage prevention from other countries and showcasing Australian initiatives to the rest of world.

Everyone along the utility management and construction value chain has a responsibility to minimise damage and injury. There is great opportunity to share ideas and learn from one another. This conference presents the ideal forum for this. It will see professionals, industry specialists and influencers come together to challenge each other, develop relationships and discuss what works best in different jurisdictions.

Dial Before Your Dig is keen to work with the industry both in Australia and internationally to achieve zero harm and zero damage. We are currently completing a project with BIS Oxford to better understand the value of the utility infrastructure sector in Australia and quantify its significance to industry and the community; ensuring that damage and injury prevention remain a focus of construction and maintenance work undertaken in or around utility infrastructure. We are also working with the University of Melbourne to identify service quality improvements to the Australian Dial Before You Dig service. This research includes a substantial literature review together with a survey of Dial Before You Dig Users to better understand how different aspects of information provided through our service add valued and prevent damage when excavating.

This research and modelling will be completed in time to be presented at the Oceania Damage Prevention Conference and will inform the design of our next generation referral service.

A highlight of the conference will be the three plenary sessions to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings during the conference. These plenaries will include Australian and international senior executives and subject experts and will focus on various topics; such as comparing Australian and international damage reporting and how this impacts damage prevention, as well as discussing damage and injury prevention systems and processes, now and in the future.

The inaugural Oceania Damage Prevention Conference will be significant for anyone involved in the management, development, construction and maintenance of utility infrastructure, showcasing Australian and international thinking on damage and injury prevention.
