Roads Cracking And Water Mains Bursting As Rapid Thaw Begins In Michigan

Ben Gergis said calls for service have quadrupled over the past week.
The co-owner and manager of operations for Bloomfield Hills-based Drymedic Water Restoration Services said pipes are freezing and breaking, which is keeping his employees very, very busy.
As the bitter arctic air is pushed out by a much warmer southerly air mass, water pipes located in homes, and underground, may be more susceptible to bursting due to the rapid freeze-thaw cycle.
Gergis said his employees have been working around the clock, literally, since last Thursday. He expects that to continue for another two weeks as the thawing out begins.
“The phones have not stopped ringing and we have over 40 trucks on the road right now,” said Gergis. “The majority of calls are for frozen pipes bursting in homes and frozen suppression lines in commercial buildings.
