On the Road to Damage Prevention: The 811 Car and 811 Bike

The One Call Concepts , Inc . (OCC) 811 Car and 811 Bike are two damage prevention icons that travel the country to promote the importance of digging safely. Both vehicles have been designed and built by Paul Teutul, Jr. of “American Chopper” fame.

In 2011, OCC commissioned Paul Jr. to design a custom motorcycle. OCC planned to use the 811 Bike in an innovative attempt to communicate the 811 message to an entirely new audience composed largely of motorcycle enthusiasts and fans of Paul Jr.’s TV show.

After six months of planning and construction, Paul Jr. unveiled the 811 Bike at the 2011
Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference (GCDPTC) in Ocean City, Maryland. Various symbols of the damage prevention industry were incorporated alongside the 811 phone number into the Bike’s design, including backhoe buckets, a full-size shovel blade and handle, and pickaxes. These easily recognized “tools of the trade” make the Bike an ideal conversation starter on the topic of underground utility damage prevention.

The 811 Bike has appeared at state fairs, damage prevention summits, the CGA 811 Excavation Safety Conference & Expo, motorcycle rallies, fundraisers, 811 runs, and major and minor league sporting events. During National Safe Digging Month in April 2015, in the only month-long event of its type in the country, the Bike traveled throughout Texas, appearing at 11 different events. Overall, the 811 Bike traveled more than 200,000 miles
across 33 different states between 2011 and 2016!

In early 2016, due to the tremendous success of the 811 Bike, OCC commissioned
Paul Jr. to build the 811 Car. The planning and construction of the vehicle took nine months to complete. The 811 Car, like the Bike before it, was first unveiled in October 2016 at the GCDPTC, followed by an industrywide premiere at the CGA 811 Excavation Safety Conference & Expo in March 2017. As with the Bike, Paul Jr. incorporated thematic symbols of excavation alongside the 811 logo into the Car’s design to make the two vehicles appear visually similar.

Jimmy Jennings, guardian and protector of the 811 Car and 811 Bike, shepherds both vehicles “on the road to damage prevention.” He uses a custom-built 40-foot trailer to transport them. Given the 811 Car and 811 Bike have now traveled more than 50,000 miles together across 17 different states, there’s a chance you may have seen it.

The outside of the trailer prominently features Paul Jr.’s likeness and a large 811 logo. A life-size “point-of-view” photograph depicting the Car and Bike loaded inside the trailer covers the rear lift gate. Drivers who unexpectedly come up behind the trailer have reported to Jimmy more than once how startled they were because the photograph gives the trailer the appearance of moving down the road with the lift gate open! The interior is
fully equipped to support moving these vehicles from event to event.

Underground utility damage prevention is a shared responsibility and by working together, we can reduce utility damages. During 2018, you can be a part of the 811 Car and 811 Bike’s continued support of education and outreach efforts designed to increase public awareness regarding the importance of underground safety. Stop by OCC’s booth #301 at the 2018 CGA 811 Excavation Safety Conference & Expo for a chance to meet Paul Jr. and see the 811 Bike in person. If you can’t make the conference, be sure to follow the 811 Car and 811 Bike on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) to see where they will show up next.
