OSHA ‘S NATIONAL EMPHASIS PROGRAM on Trenching and Excavation remains a high agency priority. The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) and its 31 chapters teamed up with OSHA, the North American Excavation Shoring Association (NAXSA), Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) for the 4th annual Trench Safety Stand Down (TSSD) Week from June 17-23, 2019 to educate workers on trenching hazards and to save lives.
Nebraska Governor Pete Rickets issued a proclamation in June to recognize Trench Safety Stand Down week. During NUCA of Nebraska’s Golf Tournament on June 20, 2019, members took a few minutes for a group photo to commemorate TSSD Week.
NUCA of Nebraska members participated in toolbox talks and training sessions during the week. L.G. Roloff Construction hosted their underground utility crews for breakfast, reviewed the top five trench safety violations and reviewed OSHA guidelines.
Contractor Solutions Trench Shoring presented training to crews with NUCA of Nebraska member companies, including Graham Construction, Valley Corp, Thompson Construction and M.E. Collins Contracting, reminding them of the weights of different types of soils and the importance of utilizing the proper shielding/shoring required for the various types of jobs/excavation they do. They also discussed the importance of proper benching and sloping in combination with trench shields as soil roll-off can be as damaging as a cave-in. The two-foot minimum set-back from the excavation was highly stressed as well.

Judds Brothers Construction employees received training on shoring and how a successful trench is made and maintained. Information was also presented about installation of shielding systems and how to properly maintain shoring.
United Rentals Trench Safety presented training about the top five trenching and excavation violations per OHSA as well as some fatality statistics. They also covered the 12 general requirements. Training was provided for General Excavating, Heimes Corporation and L.G. Roloff Construction.
The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) has received more than 16,000 TSSD forms from more than 125 companies, representing more than 40,000 employees at more than 536 job sites.
Celebrated annually during the third week of June, the next Stand Down Week will be held June 14-20, 2020.
