Hoboken Water Issues Put 100-Year-Old Infrastructure Under the Spotlight

Just hours after Mayor Ravi Bhalla threatened to sue the company that manages its water system, three water mains burst near the city’s train terminal on Tuesday, affecting 140 customers and marking the fourth day in a row broken pipes caused flooding in the Mile Square City.
The breaks — an 8- and 16-inch main break at the corner of Hudson Street and Hudson Place, and a 12-inch main break at River Street between Hudson Place and Newark Street — caused headaches for commuters during the afternoon rush hour and closed the area surrounding the PATH station.
The breaks came on the heels of separate press conferences held by the city and Suez, the water company, Tuesday morning. Bhalla declared a city-wide emergency, and said he intends to sue Suez and rebid the city’s water management contract…(Read the full story)
