Gas Line That Caused Fatal Sun Prairie Explosion Not Properly Marked Before Drilling Began

Contractors failed to properly mark a natural gas line before construction workers began drilling near it, ultimately causing an explosion that destroyed a city block of Sun Prairie and claimed a firefighter’s life.
A gas line was punctured by workers laying fiber optic cable lines for Verizon Wireless on July 10 after an Indiana-based company hired to identify utility lines marked a spot 25 feet away from where the actual line was, according to a Dane County search warrant unsealed recently.
The search warrant was executed as part of a criminal investigation into whether the crime of second-degree reckless homicide was committed when the explosion killed Sun Prairie firefighter Cory Barr.
