Columbia Gas Paid $1.1M in Fines

Columbia Gas of Massachusetts shelled out more than $1.1 million in fines for safety violations, tax audits, missed appointments and other issues in the past three years, according to documents filed with utility regulators earlier this year.

In 2017, Columbia Gas paid $252,000 for 50 violations of the state’s Dig Safe program, a public safety initiative to ensure utility workers and contractors excavating near gas, water and electric lines do so safely.

The company, whose natural gas lines led to dozens of explosions and one death in the Merrimack Valley last week, also last year coughed up $136,649 as a result of a Massachusetts Department of Revenue audit that covered 2012 to 2014…(Read the full story)
