AMEREN IMPLEMENTS “GAS SNIFFING” VEHICLE THAT DETECTS LEAKS

The Ameren mobile leak detecting unit, aka “gas sniffer”, is rolling around the St. Louis metro-east in search of gas leaks. Technicians walk along the ground with a survey device that finds leaks much quicker and is more sensitive than previous technologies.

There are several components integrated into the hybrid vehicle. The unit in front pulls in particles from the atmosphere. A sonic and monitor on the roof detects wind speed and direction. A GPS unit on the roof sends all this information back to the analyzer in the truck. The analyzer uses laser-based technology to sense methane in the atmosphere.

Ameren officials say the vehicle will allow them to find leaks quicker and spend more time fixing leaks instead of looking for them. Testing on the “gas sniffer” is ongoing, but early results are positive.
