Detailed Mapping Is Key to Utility Maintenance in Youngstown

Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, the first signs of trouble bubbled to the surface on South Avenue.

More than six feet under ground, a water line broke.

It took until just before noon to fully dig up the pipe and find the problem – a three-foot section of 12-inch pipe had cracked.

Locating the problem is a challenge. Utility companies often don’t know exactly how old their pipes and lines are. Companies merge, department heads change. The city is now starting to create system-wide maps to make problems like Tuesday’s break easier to predict.
