Editorial: Terrible Tragedy, but State’s Response Is Reassuring so Far

On Sunday, the evacuated residents of Lawrence, Andover and North Andover — three communities rocked by Thursday’s tragic gas pipeline explosions — were allowed to return to their homes. Utility workers, state and federal inspectors, police and political leaders working around the clock to ensure safety, finally gave the all-clear sign.

This does not mean all is back to normal. Far from it. But in the aftermath of incredible chaos and destruction, the state’s response, which includes that of municipal leaders too, has built the public’s confidence in the way this crisis has been managed — so far. A lot of work remains, however, to find out what happened and to launch the rebuilding process.

Columbia Gas customers — as many as 55,000 in the affected area — will have to live without the use of natural gas. With multiple investigations underway into the cause of the explosions and fires, which resulted in the death of an 18-year-old man, injuries to 25 others, and damage to at least 50 properties, it could be weeks before the gas is turned on…(Read the full story)
