Call Before You Dig: Gas Manager Wants City to Consider Ordinance

Contractors and homeowners are legally required to “Call Before You Dig” so gas, power, water, sewer and data lines can be marked by utility companies prior to construction.

Athens Gas Department Manager Steve Carter said Monday he doesn’t believe the state’s 811 law has enough “teeth” in terms of penalties. He asked the City Council and Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson to consider a local ordinance to punish those who don’t follow the law.

When a person calls 811, the caller’s information is collected, including when and where a digging project will occur. The information is passed on to local utility companies, which have up to 48 hours to send a worker to mark the lines.
