A fiber-optic cable cut in the CenturyLink network caused widespread telecommunications service interruptions today in western South Dakota and parts of Wyoming.
The outage halted both cellphone and long-distance services to many customers, said Chris Nelson, chairman of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.
Caitlin Jenney, communications manager for CenturyLink, said technicians were evaluating the situation this evening and were hoping to resolve the problem by tonight.
Affected communities included Rapid City, Sturgis, Spearfish, Box Elder and Belle Fourche, and Jenney said there were some interruptions in Wyoming, too.
No further information was immediately available, she said.
Spokespeople for AT&T and Verizon each said the cut cable affected their cellphone towers.
