Columbia Gas says it did not contribute to fatal Newcomberstown house explosion

NEWCOMERSTOWN, Ohio– Columbia Gas says its facilities did not contribute to the house explosion in Tuscarawas County Tuesday night that claimed the life of one person.

The explosion happened on Beaver Street in Newcomberstown at about 9 p.m. The name of the victim has not been released.

“Our thoughts are with the community and families dealing with the loss and impact of this tragic event. We want to assure our customers and the community of the safe operation of our system and our commitment to continue to deliver on those expectations,” Columbia Gas said in a statement Wednesday evening.

The gas company said they inspected the facilities in the area and they are safe. Columbia also said its part of the investigation is complete.  Newcomerstown residents can request a safety gas line check by calling 800-344-4077.

The investigation now rests with the Newcomerstown Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Newcomerstown Exempted Village Schools were closed on Wednesday following the blast.
