Fiber cut causes Internet, cell service outage

SHOW LOW — Mid-morning on Dec. 28, Cable One Internet service and Verizon cell phone service was affected in the White Mountains when a fiber optic cable was cut 11 miles outside of Snowflake.

According to Catrina Jenkins of Navajo County Emergency Services, this was not done intentionally, although no cause was given.

Jenkins said, “Cable One has it in their plans to bury the fiber optic cable in 2016 to reduce the risk of this cable being cut again.”

Service was restored by Cable One crews at approximately 5:25 p.m. but Verizon cell phone service, affected by the outage, was not fully restored until sometime during the night. Verizon customers were able to text and email but could not place or receive calls in certain areas. Verizon cell service in Pinetop-Lakeside, Show Low and Snowflake is affected when Cable One has an outage, Jenkis said. Customers who were able text or email were able to do so if they had access to Wi-Fi.

The Holbrook Area was not affected.
